Seton Hall’s Holloway responds to Coaching Carousel rumors

· Yahoo Sports

NEW YORK -- It’s that time of year when college basketball coaches are getting fired and hired left and right.

Seton Hall’s Shaheen Holloway knows that as well as anyone, and his name will inevitably come up in rumors, especially after he was just named Big East Coach of the Year this week.

Asked about his future Friday night by NJ Advance Media following his team’s 78-68 loss to top seed St. John’s in the Big East Tournament semifinals, Holloway said:

“Listen, I’m the coach of Seton Hall right now. I’m the coach of Seton Hall, Big Dog.”

Some loose Internet rumblings have already linked Holloway to the Syracuse opening, apparently from people forgetting that Syracuse helped get Holloway suspended four games in 2023 for tampering with Taurean Thompson while he was at Saint Peter’s.

South Florida coach Bryan Hodgson and former Syracuse star and current Siena star Gerry McNamara are the key names to watch at Syracuse.

That said, everyone involved in coaching circles knows that Holloway is an excellent coach who is doing the best he can at a place like Seton Hall, which is not competitive NIL-wise with St. John’s and UConn.

“I love the way he gets his guys to play hard, unselfish basketball,” said Hall of Fame St. John’s coach Rick Pitino. “He recruits a lot of no-name guys who aren’t on the radar and makes them name guys.

“He’s tremendous, he deserved Coach of the Year. Seton Hall’s very, very lucky to have him.”

Former Seton Hall coach PJ Carlesimo told NJ Advance Media this week: “People are going to target him, without question. He’s one of the best coaches period in the country, and...still very young. He’s very early in his career. He’s great. He’s a former player. He’s proven he can win in the NCAA Tournament. He’s proven he can win in the Big East Conference. There’s not a job in the country that he would not be a legitimate candidate for.”

For now, Holloway still has more coaching to do this season.

He said he feels his team has done enough to hear their name called on Selection Sunday, but if it isn’t the players want to keep playing in The Crown. The Hall would be locked into that event which runs April 1 & 5 in Las Vegas if they don’t make the NCAA Tournament.

“Yeah, I’m definitely hoping to keep continuing playing, and I’m definitely looking to keep playing at Seton Hall and whatever happens, happens,” said point guard Budd Clark, who tallied 17 points and 11 assists in the loss.

In the Seton Hall locker room, AJ Staton-McCray also said he wanted to keep playing.

“It’s always fun to play basketball games,” he said. “We’re all basketball players, so we like to hoop. NCAA championship or not, it’s gonna be a fun experience.”
