Detroit Lions linked to injured Tennessee star in NFL draft

· Yahoo Sports

Could the Detroit Lions shock everyone at pick No. 17?

The prevailing thought is that the Lions will draft either an offensive tackle or an EDGE. Detroit has a need at offensive tackle after it released Taylor Decker and the franchise needs to find some help opposite Aidan Hutchinson, too.

But, a report on Tuesday indicates that Detroit might head a different direction entirely. In a conference call on Tuesday, NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah linked the Lions to injured Tennessee star Jermod McCoy. The 6-foot-1, 188-pound cornerback missed all of 2025 after tearing the ACL in his right knee during an offseason workout.

While there's definitely an injury risk, Jeremiah says the upside on McCoy could be too good for the Lions to pass up.

"Jermod McCoy has top-10 talent. Like, it’s legit. All his tape (in 2024) is as good as anything you’ll see in this draft and he plays big, he’s explosive.

"So how much risk is associated with that? Does that cause him to slide or fall? It’s a little bit of a gamble there with the health situation but, man, if you hit on that one, if he’s there and you pull the trigger and hit on him, man, you’ve got a dynamic difference maker," Jeremiah said.

McCoy registered 44 tackles, four interceptions and nine pass breakups during the 2024 season with the Vols. The Whitehouse, Texas, native was a second-team AP All-American and a second-team All-SEC selection with Tennessee in 2024.

McCoy played at Oregon State in 2023, totaling seven pass breakups and a pair of interceptions.

If the Lions were to pull the trigger on selecting McCoy, it wouldn't be the first time Detroit has rolled the dice on a first-round pick with a recent injury. The Lions traded up 20 spots from No. 32 to pick No. 12 to draft Jameson Williams in 2022.

Williams had just torn the ACL in his left knee in the national championship game three months prior to the Lions drafting him.

"Take Jamo," Holmes said in his pre-draft press conference Monday, April 13 in Allen Park. "That was really his first major injury. We felt pretty good about what the injury was and felt pretty good with where medical advancements are at this point. We felt pretty good about that...

"But yeah, you just got to look at everything. It’s just, you’ve just got to feel good about it, but it’s case-by-case for sure," Holmes said.

Christian McCaffrey had 6 words about his feel for 49ers huge signing

· Yahoo Sports

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey isn't that different from 49ers fans when it comes to his reaction to the signing of free agent wide receiver Mike Evans.

McCaffrey in an appearance with Ian Rapoport on NFL Network described his feeling after he heard about the 49ers' addition of Evans early in free agency.

"I was so fired up, man!" McCaffrey said before describing why he's been a long-time Evans admirer. "He's somebody that, if you're a fan of football, you've watched his entire career and it's hard not to like the guy. He's a first ballot Hall of Famer. He's somebody that, in my opinion, has never gotten enough credit, and I think he plays that way. He plays with a chip on his shoulder. He's one of the best go-ball runners in the history of the NFL. He blocks his butt off. He's mean, and he's the perfect fit for our offense. I've just been such a fan of his from afar, and the way he plays football. So now to get to play with him, to pick his brain on a lot of stuff. That's what I'm excited about is to learn from him and see what stuff he can bring to our team that maybe we need. And to have a guy like that who's experienced in the NFL at every level is super exciting. So, we're so fired up to have him."

Evans should have a swift impact on a 49ers receiving corps that badly lacked a go-to, No. 1 target last season. Adding him to the top of the depth chart takes a lot of the pressure off a player like McCaffrey to be the 49ers' go-to target on third downs.

Perhaps most importantly for McCaffrey, Evans gets him and the 49ers closer to Super Bowl contention after falling short in the divisional playoffs last season. If Evans is the player he's been throughout his career, he should take some of the playmaking workload away from McCaffrey while elevating San Francisco's offense.
